From a young age, I was captivated by the magic of cinema. The well-written storytelling, the
compelling acting, the mesmerizing visual effects, and more. It was like stepping into a universe
of endless possibilities and limitless imagination. This passion encouraged me to master English
and pursue my dream of becoming a film director. To improve my English as effectively as
possible, I immersed myself in the language; I watched movies and TV shows with English
subtitles, read English novels, and spoke only in English. This radical approach paid off. At
sixteen, I was an exchange student in Kansas, graduating from Manhattan High School and
soaking up the differences between Eastern and Western cultures.
Returning home, I completed my mandatory military service and set my sights on prestigious
film schools. After crafting an impressive portfolio and making various creative short films and
screenplays, I found myself at Santa Monica Community College. Although proud, I knew this
was merely a stepping stone. While my initial goal was the film departments at UCLA or USC, I
was accepted into Columbia College Hollywood, which is ranked among California's top 13 film
schools. I jumped at the opportunity.
My first semester was an emotional and cultural rollercoaster. Living in a new country by
myself and adapting to a different culture proved challenging, even after spending a year in
Kansas. Fortunately, my fears quickly melted away, replaced by a comfort and belonging I hadn't
expected. By my second year, I landed an internship at Schemers Entertainment and learned
from the producer who worked on projects like "IT" and "The Lego Movie." My responsibilities
included but were not limited to writing script coverage, contacting writing clients, scouting
potential materials and clients, and location scouting. I even served as an English-Chinese
translator for a film treatment.
Post-internship, I honed my screenwriting skills at UCLA's extension program. Learning
remotely was a very interesting period made unique by the challenges of Covid-19.
Collaborating with a co-writer, I earned semi-finalist and quarter-finalist honors—an incredible
milestone. My efforts culminated in admission to the New York Film Academy's Screenwriting
Department, where I studied under industry professionals, gaining invaluable insights into the
world of film.
Despite my accomplishments, life threw me a curveball, shattering my dreams and plans of
working in the film industry. Upon graduation, I faced a challenging situation. A strike in the
industry, coupled with student visa limitations, left me with just three months to secure
employment. Despite landing interviews, I couldn't overcome the sponsorship hurdle. I returned
to Taiwan with a heavy heart but rich in invaluable experience. I now use my nine years of
experience in the U.S. to teach English and offer translation and interpretation services.
