我出生在台北，四歲時就去了加拿大。雖然普通話是我的第一語言，但英語是我在加拿大和美國大學完成學業並獲得學士學位和碩士學位的地方。

I was born in Taipei and left for Canada when I was four. While Mandarin is my first language, English is where I excel having completed my schooling and earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Canadian and American universities.

I have worked in consulting, strategy, business development, sales, marketing, accounting, corporate training, education, technology, telecom, and financial services for Global 500 companies across multiple functional areas and industries.

I have provided business communications training to executives privately and in group classes. In addition, I have taught conversational English to students from elementary school to graduate school, as well as other educators including Taiwanese English teachers and university professors. At Merica, I taught an advanced "Culturally Speaking and Writing" course to students bound for the U.S. and Europe, and prepared them on delivering presentations in group settings.

The etymology of "doctor" comes from the Latin verb "docēre" meaning "to teach." Akin to a holistic medicine practitioner, I will conduct a comprehensive assessment to identify your root issues, tendencies, proficiency levels, requirements, timelines, and aspirations, both personal and professional. From there, we'll map out what areas to tackle as well as the materials and exercises to incorporate going forward. The lessons will be customized to how you learn and process information.

Besides test preparation, the majority of students wish to improve their conversation skills and spoken English as the Taiwan education system focuses on antiquated textbook English and students are too scared or rarely have the opportunity to engage with native English speakers on a regular basis. With corporate students, they often struggle with forging deep and personable relationships with their colleagues, customers and suppliers because they're uncomfortable and unfamiliar with small talk and discussing subjects outside of work, whether it's over meals or in social situations. I'll teach you what topics are kosher and how to spark engaging conversations with your stakeholders. We can discuss current events, economics, geopolitics, technology, sports, exercise, yoga, health, stress management, detox, nutrition, traveling, photography, cultures, shopping, cuisine, cooking, baking, art, fashion, films, TV shows, music, entertainment, and any other topics of interest. As a consultant, coach and trusted advisor, I can lend an ear if you just want to talk about your day or need some sound advice in weighing an important decision.

I often incorporate role-playing exercises, speak at a native speed, and limit conversation to English in simulating real-world test, business and social situations. If you have any difficulties comprehending what’s being covered or would like me to slow down, please speak up, ask for clarification, and feel free to use Chinese. The class setting is your time to make mistakes, learn from them, and prepare for the real world.

Unlike group classes where students are fighting for talk time with the teacher, I encourage you to speak as much as possible and overcome your inhibitions to interacting with native English speakers. Our sessions can be structured or free-flowing conversational practice. I'll type out what you're saying and guide you on making the requisite corrections, so you learn from your mistakes and sound more native through appropriate word choices, contractions, accent reduction, and pronunciation drills. From my teaching and learning experiences studying Chinese, English, French, and Spanish, language acquisition and fluency comes from situational awareness, conversational practice, and contextual application of new vocabulary and concepts.

I have worked with several hundred Taiwanese students from beginner to advanced levels, including elementary and high school English teachers and university professors. Sadly, the state of English language instruction in Taiwan is severely lacking in the public school system as well as in cram schools. For example, many Taiwanese English teachers will teach incorrect pronunciation to their young learners, and those problems perpetuate throughout their academic lives and professional careers.

In selecting a teacher, make sure s/he is a native English speaker from the area you would like to study or work. For example, if you interact with colleagues and clients from North America, then find a teacher that was raised and educated there. If you want to improve your speaking and conversation skills, it's important to expose yourself to the teacher's upbringing, culture, colloquialisms used, and pronunciation, so you'll sound more native. Learning from non-native speakers is counterproductive and more costly in the long run as students will be wasting precious time and money to unlearn all the bad habits instilled by their teachers. Far too many times, I've had to break the news to students that they speak with a Filipino accent because they purchased lessons from unscrupulous business owners falsely advertising that they screen and hire Filipino teachers with American accents. If a company hires only Filipino teachers and no native English teachers from the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Australia, and New Zealand, then buyer beware!
